A cupboard can contain plenty of emergency food while its preparation requirements remain unplanned. Counting pouches tells you what you own; it does not tell you whether you have the water or time to prepare them.
Build a separate preparation-water budget. Record the water required by each exact product, multiply it by the number of pouches you plan to prepare and add the results. Keep drinking-water needs separate.
Different packs need different amounts of water
The manufacturer's current pages give these specifications. Check the directions on the packs you actually use.
| Food per pouch | Dry content | Added water | Manufacturer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Onishi Gomoku Rice | 100 g | 160 mL | Gomoku specification |
| Onishi portable salmon rice ball | 42 g | 67 mL | Salmon rice ball specification |
The portions are different. A lower water requirement does not make the rice ball an equivalent replacement for the larger rice pouch. This comparison calculates preparation water, not nutritional adequacy.
Work through a mixed-stock example
Suppose your preparation list contains six of the Gomoku pouches above and four of the salmon rice balls:
- Rice: 6 × 160 mL = 960 mL.
- Rice balls: 4 × 67 mL = 268 mL.
- Total: 1,228 mL, or 1.228 litres.
That covers added water for those ten particular packs only. It excludes drinking, other foods, cleaning and other uses. Ten packs are not automatically ten complete meals or a complete household reserve.
For your own list, multiply each pack's water requirement by its quantity. Add soup and other rehydrated foods as separate entries. Do not apply one rice product's specification to another food.
Plan around the last pack you prepare
Onishi's linked preparation instructions for these regular rehydrated rice products and non-microwave rice balls distinguish hot water from water at 15°C. They give approximately 15-minute hot-water and 60-minute water preparation times for the relevant products, with exceptions such as red rice. Follow each series' directions rather than treating any warm water as boiling water. Manufacturer preparation instructions
Opening packs, removing the included items and adding water also take time. If a particular pack requires 60 minutes and the last pouch is closed at 18:05, calculate readiness from that pouch's start time. The first pouch's timer does not establish that every pouch is ready.
You can start foods with longer waits first and arrange foods labelled for direct consumption around them. Each product still needs its own preparation steps completed.
Keep food and preparation resources on separate lists
| Exact food and version | Pouches | Water per pouch mL | Total mL | Temperature and waiting instructions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gomoku Rice 100 g example | 6 | 160 | 960 | Check the relevant pack |
| Salmon rice ball 42 g example | 4 | 67 | 268 | Check the relevant pack |
| Another household item | ____ | ____ | ____ | ____ |
Record utensils and opening instructions alongside the water information. This makes the reserve easier for another household member to use without guessing.
If nearly everything on the food list requires added water, assess preparation resources before adding more of the same food. Include preparation method when deciding which foods to stockpile, rather than comparing shelf-life claims alone.
Compare the actual contents of a set
The store's five-pouch Gomoku Rice pack and Onishi rice ball assortment provide starting points for comparing sale units. Calculate each flavour from its own package; the salmon figure is not a specification for every rice ball in an assortment.
